The Howell Hotel welcomes Airbnb guests throughout the year. Snow settles across the guesthouse and deck in winter; warmer months return the entry garden, pasture, and long views through the pines.

Our Story

Two homes, one family.

In 2013, William Howell purchased nine acres in Black Hawk with an old cabin, a rickety shed, and enough room to imagine a different way of living near family. Wendy and Robert Hogan joined him in planning a homestead where two households could remain close without giving up privacy— separate homes, shared land, and space to gather when they chose.

Architect Brad Tomecek of Tomecek Studio translated that idea into the Black Hills Homestead, completed in 2016. The main house, guesthouse, barn, and coop share the same rural materials and modern lines, but each building has its own purpose. The two homes feel like siblings: clearly related, intentionally independent.

In early 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic erased many of the internships available after college, William's oldest daughter, Rainey, made a role for herself. She listed the guesthouse and began shaping The Howell Hotel: a way to welcome people into one carefully defined part of the property while keeping the surrounding family home private.
